Kinser Brings Smiles to Some Indiana Fans
Wednesday, 10 February 2010 -
While most Hoosiers were reeling over their loss in the Super Bowl, there were some that were thrilled with news that Steve Kinser had won the final night of the rain shortened season opener event for the World of Outlaws Sprint Series. The news shouldn’t have come as much of a shock since the King of the Outlaws has been winning Outlaw races since the series began in 1978.
By winning this year in 2010, Kinser now has victories that span across five decades. Yes, do the math, it’s right. It’s also incredible considering the length of most professional athlete’s careers. While the football world ponders the fate of “old-timers” like Brett Favre, sprint car fans continue to watch Kinser as he remains competitive as he enters his golden years. In fact, Kinser celebrated in victory lane with his two year old grandson, Kash.
“There’s nothing better than getting out of the race car and having Kash there,” said Kinser. “I have always loved having my kids out there with me, but now instead of trying to meet me in victory lane after the races, Kraig is out trying to beat me during the race. Stevie is working on Kraig’s car and probably wants him to beat me more than he does, and Kurt is back home going to school at Indiana University and wrestling on a scholarship there.”
While Kinser has not won a championship since 2005, there have been lots of hurdles for him. Notably, Kinser took the points lead early in 2009, but backed out of the championship battle while he battled himself with an injury throughout most of the season. Kinser had surgery on his neck as soon as last season ended and is now stating that he feels better than he has in years, and if Sunday night’s show wasn't testament to that, then Kinser will continue to prove it throughout the rest of the 2010 season.
“It felt great to be out there racing without any pain,” said Kinser. “I guess I didn’t realize how much the pain was holding me back. But that’s not the only reason we were back out in victory lane. Scott Gerkin has been working tediously to get more power under the hood of this car, and get me where I feel like I can race anywhere on the track. He hit it on the mark this time.”
Kinser isn’t ready to quit anytime soon. The 20-Time Series Champ isn’t focused on a championship; he just wants to win races. While he knows has nothing to prove, he loves to races and he strives off the competitive edge that it takes to win out with the Outlaws.
“There’s probably not a person out there that wants to win more than I do,” said Kinser. “If there’s anyone close it has to be Scott [Gerkin], I know he could be a lot of other places, probably making a lot more money that I pay him, but he sticks it out with me. There’s a lot more to say about that than I probably ever could.”
The Kinser/Gerkin combination has been through a lot during the years, including a change in team ownership this year, as they compete under the Tony Stewart Racing flagship. The one thing that hasn’t changed and probably never will is their desire to be out racing and winning. They started the season out right and just hope to continue to be competitive throughout the year.
